What IS it about these big swanky Toronto gala parties? Having enjoyed, worked and/or suffered through so many, they always seem simultaneously over-hyped and under-organized (I confess I may still be nursing the wounds of Fashion Cares 2007 years later) yet nine times out of ten, they seem to work out fine once all participants lower both their inflated expectations and their icy defenses.
A big Bollywood party tonight missed those odds, however. It started out fabulous (The lights! The decor!) with all the lovely usual suspects (Jeanne Beker! Philip Ing! That little man from the National Post who never says hello!) but slowly, horribly, the celebrities trickled out while their entourages’ entourages trickled in and soon, well, let’s just say I had no idea India even had a Jersey Shore. I could go on but I think the sublime duo Garfunkel & Oates can sum it up best:
